font_container=&#8221;tag:h1|text_align:center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1725716794679{margin-top: 20px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">For the effective performance of its law reform functions, the Commission has the following powers under Section 11 of the CLRC Act 2004:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>consult with any organization both government and non-government Government, in the opinion of the Commission, would be affected by any proposed change in a law.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4>ordinary members of the public.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">provide advice and information to any government department or governmental institution, authority, organization, instrumentality or body concerned with proposals for the reform or amendment of a law.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4>consider any proposal for the reform of a law that is referred to it.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4>hold seminars and conferences on appropriate legal issues.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">undertake research and study programs in order to provide itself with material on which to base its recommendations on law reform matters, particularly in the field of customary law.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4>use any information, advice or assistance available to it from any source whether within or outside the Government.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">obtain information on the laws and legal systems of other countries as a means of providing ideas for the reform and development of the laws of Papua New Guinea.<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Additional powers of the Commission include:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>institute Supreme Court References challenging any law or proposed law under Section 19 of the\u00a0<em>Constitution<\/em>; and,<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">exercise the power of a Commission of Inquiry in summoning and prosecuting people who defy the Commission during its inquiries as per the\u00a0<em>Commission of Inquiry Act.<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;POWERS OF THE COMMISSION&#8221;
